Messy Church hits the airwaves!

Published 20th October 2025 by Sophie Harber

All Messy Church sessions are special but an extra-special guest visited Headington Baptist Messy Church recently to see what it’s all about – BBC Radio Oxford!

We explored ‘sea’ themed activities with a (cardboard!) boat race, practised our fishing skills and experimented with cornflower paste – contemplating how it can be both liquid and solid depending on the force at play – before gathering together to hear stories of Jesus and Peter at the sea of Galilee, and then, of course, share a meal.

Sophie Harber, Messy Church Youth Project Lead, was there and spoke to Cristina from BBC Radio Oxford on the day and then, on Sunday 12th October to Marie Lennon live ‘across the South’ on Radio Oxford, Radio Berkshire and Radio Solent! You can listen back on the BBC’s website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002kdnt with the two Messy Church segments at 1:13 – 1:17 and 2:14 to 2:21 respectively.

Each segment has some clips from the session, along with bite-sized interviews with the church and session leaders, Ian and Bex McDonald, a few young people at the session – some of them for the first time! – and Sophie. Cheryl, 12, said: ‘this is my first time. This has been a really enjoyable experience so far and I really liked how engaging the activities have been.’

If you are looking for ways to better engage older children and young people at your Messy Church, check out our latest project, Messy Momentum – we are still looking for a few more Messy Churches to take part in some of the pilot approaches. Contact Sophie [sophie.harber@brf.org.uk] to chat about what this could look like at your Messy Church.
